The Awakening – Chapter 1

Chapter 1 — Running

Day 1 — Washington, D.C. — The Pentagon — The War Room

“Cadet, what have you discovered about the strange phenomenon detected in the Jacksonville, Florida region?  Has there been any more occurrences noted there?”  The commander requested as he walked over to a computer console where a cadet sat, typing information into the terminal.  “Has a similar phenomenon been reported anywhere else in the world?”

“That’s a negative sir; there hasn’t been a reoccurrence of the event sir,” the cadet replied as the commander looked at him strangely.

“What did the scientists and analysts have to say about the phenomenon cadet?”  The commander asked as he pressed some buttons on the console.

“They haven’t seen anything like it before sir.  This seems to be a new discovery sir and it has everyone baffled,” the cadet spoke as he walked over to where the commander stood and handed him a manila folder as he saluted.

“At ease cadet,” the commander spoke as he turned around and then pressed more buttons on the console.  “Did anyone recognize that?”

“Did anyone recognize what sir?”  The cadet asked as he looked at the commander strangely.

“That,” the commander replied as he walked over to a television monitor, staring at it as he pointed at something displayed on the screen.  “Look there, that looks like a person in the center of the phenomenon.”

“Say what sir,” the cadet spoke as he walked over to the television monitor also, standing next to the commander, getting a closer look at the screen.  “Gee, how did we miss that?  It looked like a man.”

“And that there is the reason why we are here, trying to figure out what that phenomenon is cadet,” the commander stated as he turned around and then walked towards the exit in the room.  “Alert General Ranger and let him know that we’re moving to safety level orange with this new development.”

“Yes sir,” the cadet responded, saluting again as he walked over to another console in the room, picked up a headset and started working on the order he was given.

A Few Hours Later — A Secret Restricted Area

“Let me out of here!”  A young man yelled as he stood in the center of what looked like a transparent box made of energy.  “I want to go home damn it!”

“Sorry, you’re not going anywhere freak,” a soldier spoke as he walked over to where the young man was with a smile on his face.  “You’re now and forever in the custody of the United States Armed Forces.”

“I shouldn’t be in custody at all!”  The young man screamed as he reached out, making a connection with the strange field of energy that composed the box that held him prisoner, that gave him a shock, knocking him down to the floor.  “Owww!”

“If you keep your hands to yourself, that won’t happen again,” the soldier spoke with an evil leer as he laughed and then walked away from the young man.

“What in the hell is going on around here?”  The young man asked as he looked around, doing his best to not touch anything else around his body.

“That’s something you’ll find out in due time, but until then, shut the fuck up freak!”  The soldier demanded as he looked at the young man with a stern look on his face.  “If I come back over here, I’ll make you pay for wasting my damn time.  Do you understand freak?”

“I got your freak,” the young man said as he reached out again, getting another shock, being knocked back down to the floor as the soldier laughed again and then shook his head.

“Supposed to be so powerful, but seems to be dumb as a fucking brick,” the soldier stated as an alarm sounded in the room as he and others took off running, heading in the same direction.

“That’s right men, this is not a drill!  We have an event!”  Someone screamed as the young man in the strange energy prison rolled around on the floor, trying to see what was happening.

“Stop that freak!”  Someone yelled as a black man floated in the air above all of them as bolts of lightning struck the ground around the military men.

“What’s up with the lightning Sarge?”  One of the soldiers asked as he fired his rifle at the black man that floated above them as the shells that were fired, stopped in mid air and then their direction were reversed, sending the shells back to the soldier, each one falling to the ground.

“What in the hell is going on here?”  Another soldier asked as the black man descended to the ground.

“Come on, do you really think you can hurt me with that little thing?”  The black man asked as he stood in front of the soldier that continued firing his rifle as the man waved his hand as the rifle floated from the soldier’s hand and then it snapped into multiple pieces.  “I’m not in the mood to be fucked with right now.  Do you really think you can hurt me with those little toys?  Are you kidding me here?  I can control lightning and I floated from the damn sky!  Do you think you and that little toy can actually hurt me?”

“He may not be able to hurt you freak, but I on the other hand, can,” the black guy heard behind him as he smiled and then waved his hand again as the man that stood behind him floated into the air.

“I’ll let you in on a little secret, it’s hard for you to get the jump on a psychic.  I felt you coming before you got here,” the black man said as he shook his head.

“What is it that you want guy?”  One of the soldiers asked as he crawled backwards on the ground, trying to get away from the black man.

“I’m sure you already know what it is that I’m here for,” the black guy said as he raised his hand to the sky as bolts of lightning clashed through the sky, a few bolts striking the ground behind him.  “I hope you know that I mean business here!”

“I don’t know what it is that you want,” the soldier stated as he backed against a tree as the black man floated across the ground, getting closer to him.  “Honest, I don’t know what it is that you want here!”

“I’m here for the guy that you’re holding prisoner here, the one that’s inside there,” the black man stated as he raised his hand again as the soldier floated into the air and was then slammed into a tree.  “Let him go, now!”

“Stop!”  Someone behind the black man yelled as he smiled and then shook his head.

“It seems some people never learn,” the black man said as he waved his hand again as the soldiers behind him floated into the air as their guns floated from their hands.  “I want the person you’re holding prisoner inside there!  Go ahead, get him out of there now!”

“Sorry freak, that’s not going to happen.  You can’t have him,” someone on the ground spoke as the black man shook his head again.

“You know, I don’t enjoy being called that word,” the black man said as he snapped his fingers as he floated down to the ground and then stepped in front of the person that just spoke as the soldiers that floated in the air, all fell to the ground.  “If I wanted to, I could get rid of all of you people with just a thought and I wouldn’t even blink a damn eye.”

“Oh, that’s so malevolent of you,” the person said as the black man shook his head again and then pointed his finger at the man.

“You’re calling me malevolent, but you’re the ones that barged into someone’s home and stole their child!  You’re holding someone’s child prisoner and for what reason are you doing that?”  The black man asked as the person smiled slyly.

“You have no authority here freak, I don’t answer to you,” the person spoke as the black man’s eyes glowed as he turned around.

“No authority needed!”  The black man snapped as he waved his hand at the man, sending him sliding across the ground at high speed as he slammed into a wall.  “Are we clear on that?”

“Yes, we’re clear—clear that you’re just as bad as the other one,” the person said as he motioned with his hand as the soldiers converged on the location of the black man and started firing their rifles at him.

“No!  Stop!”  The black man screamed as his eyes glowed a bright yellow color as his hands sparkled with energy.  “Stop!”

“What’s wrong freak?  You can’t take the heat now?”  The person asked as he got up off the ground.  “You’re on my turf now and I’m the one that gives the orders around here, not you!”

“No!”  The black man screamed as he dropped to his knees.  “I—I can’t stop all of the bullets!”

“Don’t let up men!  Keep hitting that freak as hard as you can!”  The person screamed as the black man fell to the ground, his eyes no longer glowing.  “All right, the freak’s down!  Secure him and put him in lock up with the other one.”

“Right away sir,” one of the soldiers spoke as he threw a net over the black man and then pressed a button on his armor as he stepped closer to the black man, kicked him in the side and then laughed.  “See men, once the power dampeners were on, he was so much easier to take down.”

“There’s no time for you to be chatting about this, get him secured!  I want this one locked away as quickly as possible.  Don’t take any chances with him!”

“Yes sir,” the soldier spoke as he and a few of the other soldiers started working on securing the black man.

Bensonhurst, NY — Somewhere at a Broadway Theatre

“Darling, are you feeling all right?”  A man asked as he leaned close to the woman that sat next to him.

“I—I don’t know darling,” the woman replied as she rubbed at her head.  “I have the strangest feeling.  I—I haven’t felt like this in a long time.”

“What kind of feeling is it?  Do we need to leave?”  The man asked as he caressed the woman’s face with his hand.

“I—I don’t think we do.  Maybe—maybe the feeling will go away,” the woman stated as she sighed.  “I—I feel like there’s something wrong.”

“Something wrong like what dear?”  The man asked as the woman sighed again and then got up from her seat quickly as she looked around and then spotted the exit door as she walked down the aisle towards it as the man followed behind her.

“Tara, what’s going on?”  The man asked, following behind the woman, avoiding the strange looks from the other patrons around them.  “Tara, dear… honey… baby, what’s wrong?”

“I don’t know Darren, but this feeling is getting to be a bit intense,” the woman replied as she walked through the main doors of the building, getting outside as she looked up at the sky.  “I don’t know what this feeling means.”

“Baby, what’s going on?”  The man asked as she sighed and then shook her head.  “What does it feel like?”

“It—it’s hard to explain Darren,” the woman replied as she looked around and then ran behind the building as the man followed behind her.

“Come on Tara, what’s going on?  What are you about to do?”  The man asked.

“I’m about to do this,” the woman replied as she spun around in a circle as her body exploded in a colorful light as her clothes changed, revealing a new set of clothing for her.

“Tara, what in the hell are you doing?  Why did you change into Amazon?”  The man asked as the woman looked at him and then pulled something from the belt around her waist.

“There seems to be something wrong Darren and I don’t seem to know what it is.  The only way I can figure to find out was to turn into Amazon to see,” the woman replied as she grabbed his hand, jumped into the air, taking flight as she flew through the air, carrying him in her arms.

“I don’t mind traveling in your arms like this babe, but what if someone sees us like this?”  The man asked.

“I’m sure you can use a cloaking spell to hide us from prying eyes,” the woman stated as the man smiled as his eyes glowed a strange golden color as a glitter-like energy surrounded the two of them as the two of them streaked through the sky.

Jacksonville, FL — Sunset Apartments — The Swimming Pool Area

“Hey girl, are you feeling okay?”  A young black woman asked as she walked into the area and over to another black woman that lay out on a lounge chair.  “You’ve been out here for most of the day.  You got something on your mind Jennifer?”

“I’m okay,” the woman replied as the other woman placed a towel down on the lounge chair and then sat down.

“Are you sure Jen?  You’ve been in the same spot for a few hours,” the woman stated.

“Damn, who are you supposed to fucking be?  You’re not my fucking keeper!”  The woman identified as Jennifer snapped as she looked up at the other woman.  “If I want to lay out here in the damn open, I can do that, I’m a grown ass woman!  There’s nothing wrong with me, so stop asking!”

“Excuse the fuck out of me for giving a damn about you,” the other woman stated as she rolled over on the lounge chair, turning her back to Jennifer as she readjusted herself.

“Besides, aren’t you supposed to be in jail right now.  What in the hell are you doing here?”  Jennifer asked as she leaned up on her elbows, looking over at the woman.

“You selfish, ungrateful bitch!”  The other woman snapped as she jumped up from the lounge chair, grabbed her towel and then stormed off.

“She’s nothing but a stupid ass strumpet,” Jennifer spoke as she rolled over on the lounge chair and then rubbed at her temples.  “Damn headache…”

“Jen… Jen…” Jennifer heard, but didn’t see anyone around when she looked.

“What?  Who’s calling me?”  Jennifer asked as she looked around again and then shook her head.  “Jen girl, you’re really starting to crack up these days.  Now you’re hearing shit that ain’t there.”

Day 10 — Washington, D.C. — The Pentagon — A Secret Restricted Area

“What are you doing?”  A black man asked as he did his best to look around, noticing that he was strapped down to an examination table.

“We’re going to run some tests to see how it is that you were able to control the lightning and make things move with just the wave of your hand,” a tall white man in a lab coat stated, approaching the examination table as the black man shook his head.

“No!”  The black man screamed, struggling to get up from the table.  “I’m not going to let you do anything to me!  Asaya Masala…”

“Sorry, that’s not going to work here.  I know about you already.  You’re not going to be casting spells or throwing bolts of lightning at anyone here in this lab today,” the white man stated as he pressed a button on the exam table as some strange looking devices, mechanical arms and other tools lowered from the ceiling.

“No!”  The black man yelled as his eyes glowed an eerie reddish color.

“Something’s wrong, his eyes are glowing!  Is the dampening field on?  Is the damn thing on?”  The white man asked as he backed away from the exam table.

“Asaya Masala Magotti!”  The black man screamed as light surrounded his body as the straight jacket that was wrapped around him disappeared and was replaced with his clothing.  “I’m not going to allow you to harm me!”

“No one was trying to harm you,” the white man stated, holding his hand up as he backed away, moving against the wall as he pressed a button as an alarm sounded.

“Lies!  You’re lying!”  The black man screamed as he raised his hand as the white man was lifted up off of his feet by an invisible force and then he was slammed into the wall.  “I have to get out of here before my power fades.”

“Sorry, you’re not going anywhere,” the black man heard behind him as he turned around to see a strange, but familiar face.

“You,” the black man said as he stepped backwards from the person, acting as if he were scared.

“What’s wrong?  Are you scared of me freak?”  The person asked, stepping closer to the black man.

“I’m not scared of you,” the black man replied, his voice trembling a bit as there was a strange phenomenon in the area as a woman and man appeared in a flash of light.

“There you are,” a black woman stated as she looked around.  “JT, what have you gotten yourself into?”

“Amazon, I’m so glad to see you,” the black man stated as he grabbed the woman’s hand.  “We have to get out of here, now!”

“You heard him handsome; let’s get the hell out of here!”  The woman snapped as the three of them disappeared in a flash of light as a dozen soldiers rushed into the room.

“Damn it!”  The man yelled as he turned and looked at the soldiers.

“Sir, are you okay?”  One of the soldiers asked as the man rubbed his chin and then turned away.  “Sir?”

“No, I’m not okay!”  The man yelled as he walked over to a console in the room.  “Attention!  Attention!  Subject thirty-six got away!”

“How is that so sir?  Was the dampening field on?”  Another soldier asked as the man walked over to him and then punched him in the gut and then kneed him in the groin.  “Owww shit… sir?”

“Don’t question me again!”  The man said as he walked out of the room.

Jacksonville, FL — The Jacksonville Landing — The Parking Area

“Oh thank the Goddess,” the black man said as he and his rescuers appeared in a flash of light.

“JT, are you okay?  What in the hell did we just rescue you from?”  The woman asked as she looked at the black man closely.  “If you got capture, why didn’t you just teleport yourself out of there on your own?”

“I—I couldn’t teleport out of there for some strange reason,” the black man identified as JT replied as the white man that provided his escape looked at him strangely.  “Ah hello, I’m JT and you’re Darren, right?  It’s so nice to finally meet you.”

“A pleasure, I’m sure.  So what’s going on here guy?  What have you gotten me and my wife mixed up in?”  The guy identified as Darren asked as he looked at JT closely, looking as if he was trying to size him up for a fight.

“No, the question is, how did you two even know where to find me?”  JT asked as he looked over at the woman.

“I guess I have to chalk that one up tot he empathic abilities you blessed me with,” the woman replied with a frown.  “So tell me, what’s going on here?  Why did we have to come rescue you from a hidden room, some place strange, deep within the government’s stronghold?”

“I—I went there to help someone and I ended up getting captured myself,” JT replied as he looked down.

“How did that happen?  Wait a minute, when did all of this start?”  The woman asked.

“Last week,” JT replied, looking down at his hands as he sighed and then shook his head.  “Some military men barged into the home of the Nest family and took their eldest child.  In the process of their raid, they almost killed that young man’s parents.”

“What?  Why?”  The woman asked.

“Because he’s like us Tara,” JT replied as he shook his head again and then turned around as he waved his hand through the air as a strange orb appeared and then dropped into his hand.

“What’s that, a crystal ball?”  The woman identified as Tara asked as she watched JT closely.

“Something like that,” JT replied as he waved his hand over the orb as it glowed as he handed it over to Tara.  “Look what they did.”

“Did—did you watch this happen from Limbo?”  Tara asked as she handed the orb back to JT and then crossed her arms across her chest.

“No Tara, I saw it first hand, with my own two eyes!”  JT snapped as the area around them shook as some birds flew from the area.  “I—I had seen him earlier in the day and when I saw him, I knew—I knew he was like us.  He had been running from those damn military men.  They—they somehow tracked him to where he lived and then they captured him there, almost killing him and his parents.  They were shooting and stuff, like they had no cares about hurting anyone!”

“What in the hell are we up against here JT?”  Tara asked.

“Wait a minute babe,” Darren stated as Tara glared at him.  “Never mind.”

“I don’t really know what we’re up against here Tara,” JT stated as he turned around.  “This isn’t like the old days Tara and it’s not like when we were kids either.”

“Meaning what JT?”  Tara asked as she looked at him strangely.

“Meaning that these people are playing for keeps.  They’re taking prisoners and killing.  They don’t care about hurting anybody as long as they complete their mission, whatever the hell that may be.  It’s going to take more than you being my enhanced Wonder Woman and me being a psychic,” JT stated as Tara raised an eye at him.

“You’re more than just a psychic JT,” Tara stated as JT shook his head.

“You know what I mean,” JT said with a sigh.  “I fear the power we have won’t be enough to stop these people.”
