The Awakening – Chapter 12

Chapter 12 — A New Home

Day 84 — Jacksonville, FL — Extensive Enterprises — The Lobby

“So baby, why are we here?”  Brian asked as he and JT appeared in the middle of the lobby of an office building.

“This place is going to be our new home,” JT replied as Brian raised an eye at him.  “This place is going to be our new base of operations.”

“Really now,” Brian stated as he and JT kissed.

“Yeah, in another dimension, this place used to be our—my home,” JT stated as he caressed Brian’s cheek.

“You’re saying this office was your home in another dimension?  What is this place in this dimension?”  Brian asked as he looked around.

“So far, this place is just a regular office building, just like it started out in my dimension,” JT replied as his eyes crackled with energy.  “We don’t have Donna’s, Paul’s or Kayla’s resources here, but I think my magic will suffice just this one time.”

“Meaning what baby?”  Brian asked as he watched JT.

“Meaning, that I don’t think I’ll have to worry about personal gain, using my magic to make this place into a home for us,” JT stated with a neutral expression on his face.  “Who are Donna, Paul and Kayla?”

“They were my friends in the other dimension,” JT answered as he looked down with a frown on his face.  “In the other dimension, Kayla was very rich and she was able to get what she wanted and needed done.  She bankrolled everything we ever wanted or needed.  She paid for the building, the utilities, everything.  Whatever we wanted or needed, she got it for us.”

“Sounds great,” Brian stated as JT wiped at his eyes.

“Another one of my friends was able to use his family resources to retrofit the building to our needs.  When he was done with the additions and changes to the building, Extensive Enterprises was more than just a base of operations for us, it was a home, a place where super enhanced humans like us could be safe from harm,” JT stated as he turned away from Brian.  “That was all perfect back then.”

“It all sounds perfect baby,” Brian stated with a smile as he moved up behind JT, caressing his shoulders.

“From the outside, that place was just a building, but on the inside, we had a place to sleep, eat, he happy and to have some form of a normal life away from the fear and hatred,” JT stated with a small smile.

“I like the sounds of that baby,” Brian stated as he kissed JT’s neck and then turned him around, kissing his lips.  “Do you think this place will be the same for us here?”

“Only time will tell Brian,” JT replied as his eyes flared with psychic energy.  “There’s something wron…”

“What is it babe?”  Brian asked as he looked around as JT’s eyes crackled with energy as their surroundings changed.  “You teleported us didn’t you baby?  So where are we?”

“We’re at the source of the trouble,” JT replied, waving his hand through the air as his psychic sword appeared just as his costume changed, looking as if he had on a suit of armor made of psychic energy.  “Get ready Chase, I think we have company.”

“I’m ready for anything babe,” Brian replied as he pulled his hoodie up, covering his head as he pulled some goggles from his pocket and then used them to cover his eyes.  “Let’s do this, whatever this is.”

“They are all around here, I can feel them,” JT stated as they floated in mid-air as his hands sizzled with energy as he held the psychic sword.

“There they are!”  Brian snapped, pointing in the direction of some soldiers that ran from a building, heading towards them.

“What in the world is that?”  JT asked as he noticed one of the soldiers that carried what looked like a body bag with something in it that thrashed about.  “I think someone’s in the bag.”

“I think you’re right babe,” Brian replied as JT waved his hand in the direction of the soldier as the soldier floated off the ground.  “I bet the jerk is surprised.”

“I’m sure he is,” JT replied as the soldier looked around, trying to figure out what was happening as the other soldiers stopped running and then started firing their rifles at the two of them.  “It looked like we’re the focus of everything now.”

“Put me down on the ground babe.  I can stop them,” Brian stated as JT’s eyes flared with psychic energy as he’s lowered to the ground.  Once he touched down, he took off running, knocking the rifles from the soldiers’ hands.  “How was that Malevolent?”

“Great job Chase,” JT replied as he gestured with his hand as the body bag moved away from the soldier.  “Now let’s see what we have here.”

“None of your business freak,” the soldier spoke as JT’s eyes flared with psychic energy as the material of the body bag dissolved away into nothingness, revealing a white male that looked to be unconscious.

“Well, I’m making it my business,” JT stated with a smile as he waved his hand as if he was dismissing the soldier as the soldier floated down to the ground rather quickly, smashing into the other soldiers as if he was a bowling ball, knocking them all down.  “Strike!”

“What—what’s going on?”  The white male asked as JT looked at him as he looked around, trying to figure out what was happening around him.

“You’re all right now,” JT stated as he reached out to the man.  “Hi, my name is Malevolent, I’m here to help you.  Those soldiers were trying to take you…”

“Those fools were trying to kill me!”  The white male screamed as he looked around and then looked back at JT.  “They want my powers, but I’m not going to let them have them!  You or them damn it!”

“Okay,” JT replied with a frown as he floated backwards a bit.  “I’m not going to let them get you or your powers Mr. Carter.  I’m here to help you.”

“How—how do you know my name?  I didn’t tell you my name, so how do you know my name?  Are you working with those soldiers?”  The white male asked.

“No, I’m not working with the soldiers, I’m psychic,” JT replied with a neutral expression on his face as the male looked at him strangely.  “If you’ll let me, me and my friend there can help you get away from here and to stay safe.  Are you interested?”

“You’re saying that you can keep those guys from getting to me and hurting me, right?”  The white male said as JT smiled and then nodded his head.  “Then I’m in.”

“Cool,” JT replied with a smile as he snapped his fingers as Brian disappeared from the ground and then reappeared next to him as the three of them disappeared in a flash of light.

Bensonhurst, NY — The Home of Darren and Tara Kent — The Bedroom

“Come on Darren, don’t you think you’re overreacting here?”  Tara asked as Darren pushed past her as she took clothing items from the closet, placing them into a suitcase as he removed the items, placing them back into the closet.  “Stop it Darren.”

“No, I’m not going to stop Darlin’,” Darren replied as he looked at Tara strangely.  “What are you doing?”

“I’m packing,” Tara replied as she looked at him as if he were crazy.

“Yeah, I know you’re packing babe, but why?”  Darren asked as he watched her.  “I don’t want to leave my home, just to go down south, to some place strange, just to help your friend fight a damn war with the government!”

“You act as if what he—we’re fighting for isn’t affecting you also,” Tara spoke, looking him in the face.  “Why are you acting this way Darren?  What’s really going on here?”

“I don’t want to go!”  Darren exclaimed, looking away from Tara.

“Why don’t you want to go Darren?”  Tara asked as she walked around in front of Darren, using her finger to lift his chin so she could see his face.  “What are you hiding from me Darren?”

“I’m not hiding anything from you,” Darren replied as Tara shook her head.

“Why do I get the feeling that you are,” Tara stated as she sighed.  “Come on Darren, I’m your wife…”

“Yes, you’re my wife, but I fear that if we go to join your friend at his new base of operations, you won’t be any longer,” Darren replied with a sigh as a few tears fell from his eyes.

“What’re you talking about Darren?”  Tara asked.

“You know what I’m talking about Tara,” Darren stated as his eyes shimmered with energy.  “We talked about this years ago… you told me about how you felt…”

“Do you think you’re going to lose me to fighting evil?”  Tara asked as she stepped closer to Darren, caressing his face.  “I love kicking ass and all that, but I love you too.”

“You may love me, but you have that streak of always wanting to take down the bad guys and now that your friend has returned, I fear you’ll follow him and forget about coming back to me,” Darren stated.

“That’s silly Darren, I’ll never forget to come back to you,” Tara stated as her smile turn to a frown.  “I wouldn’t have to come back to you, because you’ll be by my side baby, right?”

“Tara,” Darren spoke and then looked down.

“So, if I go, you’re not going with me, is that it?”  Tara asked as she folded her arms across her chest.

“Why should I go?”  Darren asked.

“You should go because it’s the right thing to do,” Tara stated as she sighed and then moved in front of Darren as she caressed his face.  “General Ranger and the people that follow his lead are evil, don’t you see that?  Their goal is to hurt and kill people like us.”

“That may be true and all, but is this really our fight hun?”  Darren asked, looking down at the floor.  “We only know about the going-ons of General Ranger because your friend got mixed up in something that was going on with him.  Had he not called out to you with his mind and needed your help, we wouldn’t know anything about General Ranger or the things he does.”

“I’m sure we would’ve eventually crossed paths with him,” Tara stated as Darren shook his head and then sighed again.

“With the things I’ve witnessed, I believe that to a point, but I think this fight is way bigger than us,” Darren stated as he looked down and shook his head again.

“It’s not just us, it’s him, Brian and Walden,” Tara stated as Darren sighed again.  “The fight is bigger than us as individuals, but I believe that as a team, we can help right a bad wrong in this world.”

“What makes you so sure about that?”  Darren asked, looking Tara in the face.

“Because I have faith in JT,” Tara stated as Darren stepped back from her.  “What is it with you and him anyway?”

“What do you mean?”  Darren asked as she looked at him closely.

“Every time I mention his name, you act as if you don’t like him and when I mention your name to him, he tells me to go talk to you, that you’re not so innocent as you let on. What does he mean by that Darren?”  Tara asked.

“I don’t like him Darling,” Darren replied as Tara raised an eye at him.  “As for what he’s talking about, I don’t know why he tells you that.”

“Why don’t you like him?”  Tara asked.

“Before him, you were all mine.  Now I have to share you it seems,” Darren spoke, almost in a whiny tone as Tara raised an eye at him.  “You’re my wife, not his.”

“You’re serious, aren’t you,” Tara spoke as she covered her eyes and then shook her head.  “Darren James, what in the world is wrong with you?  JT is a gay man, he has Brian and…”

“And he is the man that has always been your friend, from childhood even.  He’s the man that gave you the powers that you’ve always dreamt of having and he’s the man that made your fondest wish come true,” Darren stated as he looked down.  “That’s something no other person on the planet, in this reality can ever compete with.”

“Darren, it’s not…” Tara stated as Darren shook his head.

“JT did something, neither I or any other person can ever do for you.  So what am I supposed to think babe?  This man made your fondest wish come true with just the wave of a hand.  How can I just overlook the fact that the man that did all of that for you, has come back into your life after being gone for so long and he wants you to help him fight a war that can be fought by someone else.  What am I supposed to think here babe?  Really, what am I supposed to think?”  Darren asked as he looked at Tara with a sad expression on his face.

“You should think that a friend needs help fighting for our kind Darren,” Tara stated as she turned around.  “I love you, but I see a great wrong in the world and I’m going to help my friend stop that wrong.  I love you and I hope you love me.  Are you coming with me or are you staying here?”

Somewhere in Augusta, ME — The Home of Leighton Stroyer

Helia’s POV

Damn it, why is this so hard to do?  I’ve been here for days and this place seems like a mystery to me, just like everything else in my life.  This is my damn house, yet I feel like a stranger here.  The pictures on the walls seem familiar to me, but the names and faces aren’t actually coming to me.

Damn that evil man!  Damn him straight to hell!  General Ranger is an evil man that doesn’t deserve to live.  What did that monster do to me?  Why can’t I remember things about my life?  My life, my family, everything that makes me, me is a damn mystery to me.  I know zilch about myself and it’s very frightening.  How can I persuade other people to trust me, if I don’t even know myself?

“Amazon was nice to me, but I don’t think she really trusted me all that much,” I said as I walked around the room, looking at the different knick-knacks scattered around the room.  “I really enjoyed hanging around her and the others, but how can I do that when they don’t trust me?”

The boy that runs fast said something that really hit close to home and hurt my feelings a little bit.  The words he said are still ringing in my head.  ‘How do you expect us to be around you when we know nothing about you?’  He has a point.  I understand his way of thinking and I agree.  It’s hard to trust someone when that person knows nothing about her damn self.  The unknown factor, me, can be a hazard, especially since that damn monster, General Ranger has tried to use me multiple times to get to them.  Now that I’m away from him and the others, I’m going to focus on trying to get myself better, so I can help JT and the others put a stop to him and others like him.  Once General Ranger has been stopped, he won’t be able to hurt anyone else the way he’s hurt me.

“JT told me that if I surrounded myself in a familiar environment, I would start to remember things about myself, but I don’t think this is working,” I said, walking through the house, admiring more of the pictures of myself and possibly family and friends that hung on the wall.

“Helia, it’s not working because there seems to be some kind of block in your mind,” I heard JT’s voice as he materialized before me.  “Are you okay Helia?”

“Besides the not knowing myself, I’m peachy,” I replied as he looked down and then waved his hand as a strange looking wand appeared.  “I wish there was an easy way of putting things right.”

“I wish there were too, but there isn’t,” he replied with a sigh.  “All I can do is help you the best I can.  Right now, I don’t know what good that’s going to do in helping you recover your memories.  I learned a long time ago not to use my psychic powers to try to fix broken memories.”

“I wish you could use your mind powers to help me,” I said as he shook his head and then looked at the wand that he held.  “Are you sure there’s nothing you can do to help me?”

“If there was something I could do Helia, I would,” he replied.  “A long time ago, I had problems with my memories and come to find out, it was my psychic powers that caused the problems in the first place.”

“Your psychic powers were causing memory problems for you?”  I asked as he nodded his head.

“I’m starting to think that maybe you have an untapped psychic potential or there’s something else blocking your mind,” he said as a purple colored energy glowed around his eyes as he stepped closer to me as I could feel the energy around his body and it felt like static electricity jumping off of his body, onto my skin.  ‘Helia, can you hear me?’

“Did—did you say something?”  I asked, opening my eyes as he looked at me and then smiled.  “I thought I heard you say my name.”

“I said something, but I didn’t speak words with my mouth,” he replied as he stepped back away from me.  ‘Can you still hear me Helia?  I’m speaking in my mind, not actively using my telepathy to talk to you.  If you can hear me, nod your head.’

He stood there, looking at me as I could faintly hear his voice in my mind.  Doing as he requested, I nodded my head as he smiled again and then stepped closer to me.  Looking at me strangely as the purple glow surrounded his eyes.  Placing fingers on the side of my head, I heard a strange humming noise and then a popping sound as I opened my eyes to see that he was against the wall, looking as if he was struggling to move against something that was invisible that held him against the wall.  Looking around, I noticed that there were a bunch of soldiers in the room, armed with rifles.

“What in the hell is going on?”  I asked as General Ranger walked into the room and stood in front of me with a smile on his face.

“Hello again Ms. Stroyer,” General Ranger spoke as I backed up, bumping into the wall as he stepped closer to me.  “I’ve missed you, my sweet little teleporting pet.”

“I am not your damn pet!”  I screamed, slapping him across the face as one of the soldiers made a move to get to us as he held up his hand, stopping the soldier.  “What in the hell are you doing in my house?  How did you know we were here?”

“My dear, there isn’t anywhere you could go, that I don’t know,” General Ranger replied as he smiled and then turned away from us.  “Tag them both and get them ready to leave.”

“Not on your life!”  JT screamed as his eyes glowed a strange green color as he slid down from the wall and then grabbed my hand as we both ran down the hall, heading out of the house as the soldiers followed behind us.

“We need to teleport!”  I screamed as the soldiers followed behind us.

“Can’t do that, power dampeners,” JT said as we continued running through the house and then we got outside into the yard.  “Damn it, I’m getting tired of seeing these damn soldiers.”

“What are we going to do?”  I asked as he looked at me.

“We’re going to run for it,” he replied as he mumbled something in a strange language as it looked like our bodies were bathed in fairy dust or something as he looked around and then pointed at the back fence.  “We’re going that way.”

“You’re joking, right?  That fence is almost twenty feet tall,” I said as he smiled and then motioned with his head for us to go.  “You’re not joking at all.”

“We can do it, let’s go,” he said as we ran through the backyard as the soldiers continued following behind us, firing their rifles at us, but the beams ricochet in different directions as we kept on running.  Once we got to the fence, he grabbed my hand as he bent his knees like he was going to jump and he did that, the two of us sailing over the fence and landing over it, onto the sidewalk on the street behind my house.  “See, I told you we could do it.  Now let’s get far away from those power dampeners so we can get the hell away from here.”

We ran down the street for a bit as I noticed his body was glowing.  He stopped running, breathing hard as he smiled at me.  Looking around, he snapped his fingers as a strange energy surrounded the two of us and I could tell that we were headed somewhere else.  When I saw light again, it looked like we were in the middle of an office building.  Where are we now?

Jacksonville, FL — Extensive Enterprises — The Lobby

“What in the hell is going on?”  Walden asked as he jumped backwards as JT and Helia fell to the floor in the area with him.  “Are we under attack?”

“Not at the moment,” JT answered, getting up off the floor and dusting off his clothes as he turned around.

“Are you okay baby?”  Brian’s voice could be heard, but he wasn’t seen as some papers flew into the air.

“You might want to work on that Brian,” JT stated as Brian kissed his cheek.  “There’s no point in disturbing the area around you when you use your speed.”

“You might want to institute a ‘no running in the building’ rule for him,” Walden stated as he raised an eye at Brian as Brian showed him the middle finger.  “Jerk.”

“Whatever,” Brian said with a smile.  “Are you two okay?”

“We are now,” JT replied as he spun around in a circle as an energy-like ribbon shot out from his body as his clothes changed.  “That’s so much better.”

“That’s so freaky,” Walden spoke as he shrugged and then walked away.

“You’re just jealous man,” Brian said with a chuckle.

“This is our new home Helia,” JT spoke as he walked over to a computer terminal.  “This is…”

“Wait, this place looks like an office of some kind,” Helia spoke as JT looked at her.  “An office is your—our new home?”

“To the rest of the world, this is an office building, but to us, it’s going to be our home,” JT stated with a smile.  “That’s if you want this to be your home Helia.”

“Well, as you just saw, my home isn’t quite safe at the moment,” Helia stated as she looked down.  “What am I going to do JT?  How am I going to get my life back?”

“I don’t have an answer for that question Helia,” JT replied.  “The only answer I can give you right now is that I’ll do everything I can to make sure that you and the others here are protected.  That’s the only peace of mind that I can offer to you.”

“I—I don’t know what to do right now JT,” Helia spoke as the tears streamed down her face.  “I don’t know what to do or where to turn.”

“The first thing you should do is calm down,” JT stated as he walked over to where she stood.  “I know this is a big deal and all, but in order for you to get back to some form of normalcy for yourself, you have to set a routine and…”

“Besides being a super enhanced human, are you a doctor also?”  Helia asked as JT shook his head.  “You sound almost like a doctor or a counselor.”

“I’m not a doctor,” JT replied with a frown.  “If I had become a doctor, that probably would’ve made my mother proud.”

“Ah babe, can I see you over here for a minute,” Brian said, grabbing JT by the arm and pulling him over to a corner of the room.

“What are you doing Brian?”  JT asked, looking at Brian strangely.

“Why did you bring her here?  Can we actually trust her?”  Brian asked, looking at JT closely.  “How are we supposed to trust her when she knows nothing about herself?  Can she even be trusted?”

“The same could be said for any of us here,” JT stated as Brian frowned.

“No it can’t babe.  She’s evil!”  Brian snapped as Helia looked over at him and JT.  “She shouldn’t be here with us.”

“She’s not evil Brian,” JT responded as Brian shook his head.

“She was under General Ranger’s spell!  She was working for him, using her powers for him!  She sent Amaryllis and Alpha away!”  Brian screamed as he pointed at Helia.  “She can’t be trusted!  How are the rest of us here, going to be safe around her?  At any damn time she could up and use her powers to get rid of one of us or all of us!”

“Brian, I don’t think…” JT stated as Brian interrupted him.

“No, you didn’t think at all!”  Brian screamed.  “She’s dangerous baby.  She can hurt us here!”

“I don’t think she’s going to hurt us Brian,” JT stated as Brian threw his hands up and then walked away, fuming mad.

“What’s going on in here?”  Jennifer asked, walking into the room.

“It seems I’ve caused a problem,” Helia replied as she looked down.  “I… I think I’ll go now.”

“No Helia, you’re not going anywhere,” JT stated as he moved over to where she was.  “Brian is just upset right now, but I’ll…”

“No JT, I just need to go,” Helia stated with a frown.  “Maybe he’s right.  It would fit with all that’s happened.”

“No it doesn’t,” JT replied as Helia shook her head.

“He has a point, I am dangerous,” Helia stated with a frown.  “How was General Ranger able to find us?”

“I don’t know,” JT replied.

“I think I do,” Helia stated with a frown.  “He said that there wasn’t any place I could go where he wouldn’t know.  I think he can track me down.”

“How do you mean?”  JT said as his eyes flared with psychic energy.

“I think there’s something inside of me that allows him to find me,” Helia stated as JT held his hand out in front of Helia’s body.

“Is there some merit to what she says JT?”  Jennifer asked.

“I’m scanning her right now,” JT responded as his eyes stopped glowing.  “There seems to be a strange object at the base of your skull Helia.  Do you happen to know what that is?”

“No, I don’t know,” Helia replied as she looked at JT.  “Is that the thing that allows him to find me?”

“I’m trying to get a better view of it,” JT stated as his hand shimmered with energy as Helia floated off of her feet.

“J, what are you doing?”  Jennifer asked.

“I’m trying to remove that thing, whatever the hell it is,” JT replied as his eyes glowed.

“Is that going to hurt her?”  Jennifer asked.  “Do you know what you’re doing?”

“I’m trying to phase it from her body,” JT responded as Helia’s body shimmered with energy as it looked like her body had turned translucent as the strange device that lay at the base of her skull was made visible as JT waved his hand as the device moved away from Helia’s body and then fell to the floor.  “There, it’s out of her body.”

“Is she okay?”  Jennifer asked as she moved under Helia’s body, trying to get a view of Helia’s face.  “She doesn’t look ‘okay’ JT.  Is she okay man?”

“I—I can’t tell right now,” JT replied, gesturing with his hand as Helia’s body floated around in the opposite direction.  “I think the sudden removal of the device from her body, caused her to go into shock and knocked her unconscious.”

“You don’t say,” Jennifer stated as she shook her head.  “We need to get her some medical attention.

“Let’s get to the infirmary,” JT stated as Jennifer looked at him strangely.

“We have an infirmary now?”  Jennifer asked as JT waved his hand as the four of them disappeared from the area.
