Chapter 3 — A Failed Abduction
Day 12 — The South side of Jacksonville, FL — The Avenues Mall — The Food Court Area
“Hey girl, do you want some sauce?” Laci asked as she looked in Jennifer’s direction.
“Some soy sauce is fine with me,” Jennifer answered as she looked around again, spotting what looked like a soldier that was moving close to her location. “Okay, this isn’t going to end well. I’m sure that guy knows I can see him. What am I going to do here? What can I actually do that wouldn’t expose my powers?”
“Ms. Blake, may I have a word with you?” Jennifer heard behind her as she turned around quickly, seeing the man that had been watching her from the second level of the mall.
“Who are you?” Jennifer asked as she looked at the man closely. “Do—do I know you?”
“My name is General Ranger,” the man replied with a smile. “I know what you are capable of doing here and I need for you to be cool and just come with me.”
“Sorry mister, but she’s not going anywhere with you,” JT’s voice was heard as he appeared in a burst of light, grabbed Jennifer’s hand and then vanished with her.
“No!” The man screamed as a few soldiers rushed to his location. “She—she got away damn it!”
“What in the hell is going on around here?” Laci asked as she looked around frantically. “Where’s Jennifer?”
“What do we have here? Maybe all isn’t lost after all. Get that woman there!” The man demanded with a smile. “Maybe we can use this woman to bring Ms. Blake back. I’m sure she’ll do anything to get her friend back. Be quick, get that woman there.”
“Yes sir,” one of the soldiers stated with a salute as he grabbed Laci by the arm, holding her tightly as another soldier placed a bag over her head as they carried her out of the mall, kicking and screaming as they got her outside to a waiting van.
A Few Feet Away from the Mall’s Parking Lot
“Amaryllis, are you okay?” JT asked as he looked at the woman as the two of them materialized in a burst of light.
“What’s going on Warrior? Who was that man?” Jennifer asked as she looked at JT closely and then looked around the area.
“They have your friend Laci,” JT stated as psychic energy flared around his eyes. “Apparently someone in the government is trying to get to people like us. I’ve already been on the receiving end and I don’t think you want to experience that.”
“No and I won’t,” Jennifer stated as her eyes glowed as her hair changed color as JT stepped back as the energy emanated from her body in all directions.
“No Jen, you need to calm down,” JT spoke as she shook her head.
“No, I need to kick some ass! That shit back there was a set up! They knew about my powers! They knew where I was! That guy called me by name!” Jennifer screamed as she threw her hands up. “Who is that man?”
“I can’t tell you because I don’t know,” JT replied as he looked down.
“He—he called himself General Ranger,” Jennifer stated as JT shook his head.
“I heard him,” JT replied as his eyes glowed. “I know this guy, I just don’t know where I know him from.”
“So what are we up against here?” Jennifer asked.
“I’m not going to lie to you Jen,” JT stated with a frown. “Apparently they know about our powers and possibly how to neutralize them. I went up against that guy and his military men… they were able to capture me.”
“Wait a minute, red flag! They were able to capture you? Aren’t you supposed to be a powerhouse, capable of stopping any…” Jennifer spoke as JT shook his head, stopping her.
“Where that guy is concerned, my magic and telekinesis didn’t even stand a chance,” JT stated with a frown. “I went down girl; I went down like never before.”
“Damn, that’s not good,” Jennifer said as she turned around, gasping as she covered her mouth as she spotted General Ranger and his soldiers. “Bro, we have company here.”
“What do you mean we have company?” JT asked as he turned around. “I—I didn’t even sense them. See, this is what I’m talking about girl.”
“And that’s not a good thing either,” Jennifer stated as her eyes glowed as she jumped into the air, taking flight as one of the men fired a strange weapon that projected a net-like contraption that wrapped around her, stopping her from flying away. “What the hell!”
“No!” JT screamed, shaking his head as his eyes glowed as a few of the military men rushed him as his hand glowed brightly as a sword made of psychic energy appeared. “Get away from me damn it!”
“You might as well give up freak. You two can’t win here,” General Ranger spoke with a smile on his face as he stepped closer to where JT and Jennifer were as he laughed maniacally.
“What’s going on here?” Tara asked as she and Darren appeared in a flash of light.
“I—I won’t let you creeps win!” JT screamed as he hit one of the men with his sword, knocking the man down to the ground as he moved around quickly, striking another soldier with the sword as the man fell to the ground as he shook and convulsed. “I—I can’t keep up like this! I—I need an upgrade…”
“You need an upgrade to what?” Tara asked as she looked around as JT’s body glowed brightly.
“Anima aeternam mutatio-Up!” JT screamed as a ribbon-like energy shot out from his body, enveloping his body as the glow got brighter, blinding the soldiers near him as his body floated into the air a bit, his clothing changing, revealing a different set of clothing for his body, making him look like a royal authority figure.
“What in the hell is that? What’s going on Warrior?” Jennifer asked as she got the net-like contraption off of her body. “Warrior, are you okay?”
“J, what’s going on here?” Tara asked as Darren grabbed her hand, pulling her away from where JT was.
“No babe; something’s wrong. I—I’m detecting strange magical energies here and it’s not good,” Darren stated as Tara looked at him and then back to JT. “The energy is coming from him. He—he’s tapped into something he shouldn’t be tapping into.”
“I am power!” JT screamed as he raised his hand to the sky as lightning clashed through the sky as a bolt struck him, causing him to scream out as if he were in agony.
“Oh no, this doesn’t look so good,” Darren stated as he waved his hand, using his powers to shield himself and Tara.
“Mundus Silens!” JT screamed as a bolt of lightning struck his body again as he lashed out with his hand, motioning in General Ranger’s direction as a beam of energy projected from his body, zapping General Ranger, knocking the man down to the ground. “I don’t know who you are, but I’m putting a stop to you right now!”
“He’s using old tongue,” Darren stated as he shook his head and then waved his hand quickly, using his powers to move himself in front of General Ranger as he used his powers to shield himself and the man from JT’s attack.
“Darren, what are you doing?” Tara asked as she jumped over to where Darren was, trying to reach for him, but wasn’t able to touch him because of an invisible barrier around his body.
“No Love, I can’t allow your friend to hurt this man. There’s something wrong here,” Darren stated as Tara vanished and then reappeared behind JT.
“You can’t stop me from stopping him!” JT screamed as his eyes flared with psychic energy. “That man tried to kill us, all of us!”
“Don’t worry Warrior, he’s mine!” Jennifer screamed as Tara shook her head, grabbed her lasso and then used it to rope Jennifer in, stopping her from moving.
“I don’t understand what’s going on here, but if my husband is trying to stop this madness, I’m going to let him do so,” Tara stated as Darren smiled as the energy and ribbon flared about JT’s body, changing his clothing back to what he previously had on.
“David Ranger, I won’t allow you to hurt me, my friends or innocent people like us!” JT snapped as General Ranger got up off the ground and then wiped at his mouth. “You called me Malevolent earlier; I think that’s a name I should adapt here, just for you!”
“What’s going on?” Tara asked as JT’s eyes glowed.
“Amazon, get your husband before he causes a bigger problem,” JT said as he pointed at Darren. “The next time I won’t stop, I’ll zap his ass too!”
“That’s not called for,” Darren stated as he moved closer to where JT stood. “The General isn’t trying to hurt anyone, he—he’s trying to get help.”
“Are you out of your fucking mind? You must be crazy! Amazon, did he fall and bump his head somewhere?” JT asked as he looked at Darren as if he were crazy. “That man and his damn goon squad have been trying to kill all of us, including you! Open your damn eyes man!”
“That’s not really correct,” General Ranger spoke as he walked past Darren with a sly smile on his face. “My men were merely trying to keep the peace. If you look at things logically I suppose, you people attacked first.”
“No, you and your damn men attacked first!” JT snapped, the vibrations from his voice shaking things up around them as a few of the soldiers fell to the ground. “You and your so-called men bum-rushed a young man in his home and when I went to get him back for his family, you knocked me out and then kept me prisoner for a few days, locked to a damn exam table, in one of your damn research rooms!”
“But you still attacked first,” General Ranger spoke as JT shook his head as lightning clashed through the sky.
“Are you fucking kidding me here? Are we even listening to this crap?” JT asked as he looked around. “You know what, it doesn’t matter, I’m going to kill them right now!”
“No JT, I won’t allow that to happen. We don’t kill,” Darren stated as JT shook his head.
“Hmph, you have no choice in the matter man,” JT stated as he waved his hand in General Ranger’s direction as nothing happened as the man smiled.
“Things are okay here men, take them down… all of them, now!” General Ranger demanded as Darren’s eyes widened.
“See, just what I expected from an evil man!” JT snapped as he moved around Darren quickly as his psychic sword appeared in his hand again as he fought against the soldiers that fought to capture him.
“I—I was tricked?!” Darren screamed as he gestured with his hand, using his powers to cast a spell as a few of the soldiers changed into small creatures.
“Stop the conjurer, before he does something more!” General Ranger screamed as more soldiers fired their weapons at Darren as he raised his hands, quickly using his magic to create a shield around his body, deflecting the bullets.
“Damn, this is harder than it looks!” Darren screamed as his eyes glowed an eerie green color as magical energy surrounded his body, deflecting the soldier’s bullets in different directions.
“Warrior, what are we going to do here?” Jennifer asked as she punched one of the soldiers, knocking the man across the parking lot as she grabbed another one and then tossed him through the air.
“We fight until we end this!” JT yelled as he disappeared and then reappeared behind a few of the soldiers, slashing them with his psychic blade as they shook and then fell to the ground. “Brian, do your thing!”
“Cool,” Brian spoke as he ran around the area, knocking a few of the soldiers down to the ground. “This is going to be so much fun!”
“Fall back men, there are too many of them to fight right now!” General Ranger demanded as he pressed a button on his belt as a jet descended from the sky as a landing bay door opened.
“I don’t think so!” JT snapped as he disappeared and then reappeared near General Ranger, making contact with his forehead with his bare hand.
“What’re you doing?” General Ranger asked as JT’s eyes glowed brightly as psychic energy flared around his head, the aura taking on the form of a firebird. “What’re you doing to me?”
“I’m making you forget about us!” JT screamed as a few soldiers fired their rifles on him and the man as he held out his hand, using his powers to deflect the bullets the best he could. “It seems your boys there don’t care if you die, so that must mean you’re not the top man on the scene!”
“Warrior, what are you doing?” Jennifer asked as she punched another of the soldiers. “We don’t have time for this!”
“I’m stopping him and his men from finding us again!” JT replied as General Ranger pressed another button on his belt as a strange energy field surrounded his body, knocking JT away from him. “What in the hell was that?”
“Are you okay man?” Darren asked as he knelt down to help JT up off the ground as Brian stopped behind the two of them.
“Are you okay buddy?” Brian asked as he looked at JT, leaning in and dusting JT’s costume off. “It looks like you took a nasty fall there.”
“I’m fine,” JT replied as his eyes shimmered as a wave of energy started from his head and then traveled down to his feet, making his costume look good as new.
“Man, that’s so cool,” Brian spoke with a smile as he watched JT.
“We need to get away from here and now,” JT said as he looked around. “It seems the General and his soldier friends made a quick exit.”
“Yeah, they got away with my friend,” Jennifer stated with a frown. “We have to do something to get Laci back.”
“We will Jennifer, but first we have to find a place to go,” JT stated as his eyes glowed. “We can’t stay out here in the open like this. We need to regroup and get some rest.”
“We can go back to my place in New York,” Tara stated as she looked over at JT.
“Are you sure about that Tara?” JT asked as she nodded her head.
“I think we all need to wash up, get a bite to eat and get some rest. After that, then we all need to talk,” Tara stated as JT looked at Darren and then frowned.
“I’m game with that,” Brian said as he stepped closer to JT with a smile on his face.
“JT, do you want to do the honors here?” Tara asked as JT looked at her strangely as he grabbed her hand and then raised his other one as the five of them disappeared.
Day 15 — Los Angeles CA — LA County General Hospital — A Critical Care Room
“Look Mack, I don’t know what we’re facing here, but there’s got to be some reasons for why this funny stuff keeps happening around here,” Dr. Michael Tanner stated as he looked over the chart for the patient he was in the room to analyze.
“Could it be the trauma to the brain that’s causing the strange results?” James ‘Mack’ Griffiths asked as he looked at the patient’s x-ray slides.
“It could be the trauma to the brain, but I don’t suspect the trauma is the cause for all of this,” Dr. Tanner stated as he flipped some pages in the chart.
“That what do you suspect is?” Mack asked as he looked at the man, just as the heart monitors connected to the patient all sounded abruptly. “What in the hell is going on?”
“Let’s step outside,” Dr. Tanner suggested as he opened the door to the room as the machine’s buzzers all stopped. “I can’t explain why the machines do that, but the readings in the chart are extraordinary.”
“Yes, the readings are remarkable, but those machines only do that when someone starts talking about the brain trauma, correct?” Mack spoke as he looked at his colleague. “Maybe that’s some kind of sigh.”
“Maybe so, but a sign of what? Only God knows the answers to what’s going on in the mind and body of that patient,” Dr. Tanner stated as he placed the chart in the holder on the door. “Walk with me.”
“Where are we going?” Mack asked as he looked back at the nurse’s station they passed.
“I think we need to talk about some things,” Dr. Tanner stated with a smile as they continued walking down the hall, entering a new wing of the hospital. “This is what I want you to see.”
“What is this place?” Mack asked as he looked around.
“This is a new research testing wing,” Dr. Tanner answered with a smile as he motioned with his hand for Mack to walk inside. “I, along with others here, think your expertise, dealing with gene research will help us out greatly with some of the cases we come across here.”
“What kind of research testing do you do here?” Mack asked as he looked at a strange machine in the room.
“The kind of research that benefits our nation,” Dr. Tanner stated with a sly smile.
“Go on,” Mack said as he moved around the room, looking at different items as he stopped in front of one of the machines that was active. “What is this machine?”
“I don’t know,” Dr. Tanner stated as he walked up behind Mack. “This is something that one of the other doctors is working on. I think it has something to do with how certain forms of energy effects the cellular structure of the body.”
“Someone is working on the effects of energy on the cellular structure of the body? What other kind of testing is going on here at this hospital?” Mack asked as he looked back at the man.
“There are many different projects going on here. I wouldn’t be able to tell you what they are, that’s classified,” Dr. Tanner stated as he smiled at the man. “Besides, if something goes wrong, we’re already in a hospital. It’s something like a win-win here.”
“I’m sure it is a win-win, but there are different concerns I would…” Mack stated as Dr. Tanner patted him on the back and then walked him to another area of the room.
“I’m sure your concerns are valid and all, but there are a lot of things your talents could be used for here,” Dr. Tanner stated as they walked over to another machine as Mack got closer to it and rubbed the glass to see that there was a person inside of it. “So what do you say Mack. Are you interested in signing on with us to help out?” Dr. Tanner asked as he extended his hand to Mack.
“What all is involved?” Mack asked as he turned away from the machine, looking at Dr. Tanner.
“Someone from the DoSR will contact you and you’ll go from there,” Dr. Tanner stated as he and Mack walked towards the exit of the area.
Washington, D.C. — The Pentagon — A Secret Restricted Area
“At ease soldier,” a tall white man spoke as he entered the room. “Where is General Ranger?”
“The General isn’t available sir,” the soldier replied as the man looked at him strangely. “Is there something I may help you with sir?”
“I would like to know what happened out in the field a few days ago with your team and the General,” the man spoke as he walked over to a computer console, pressed a button, scanned his ID badge on the computer console and then pressed more buttons as a video monitor activated as footage of events that happened with General Ranger and JT was displayed on the screen. “What was that? What happened here? Where are the subjects in this footage? There isn’t a record of those beings here.”
“Ah… Sir… Well… That’s because they are not here,” the soldier spoke as the man raised an eye at him. “Sir, if I could just…”
“Why aren’t those beings here? I see footage here that you all were there with them, so why weren’t they captured and brought here?” The man asked as he looked at the soldier closely. “Why aren’t those things here?”
“Sir, that is… I don’t now how to answer that sir,” the soldier replied as he looked down.
“Look at me when I talk to you boy,” the man spoke as he pressed another button on the computer console. “As you can see, you all were equipped with everything you needed to bring those—those things in. So why aren’t they here right now? I know the equipment isn’t faulty. The equipment is able to do what our goal is. So boy, either your leadership in obtaining what we want is faulty or there’s another problem. Which is it boy?”
“Sir, I don’t know how to answer that question,” the soldier spoke with a frown on his face.
“Then I’ll answer it for you,” the man spoke as he looked at the soldier closely. “As of this moment, you are no longer in command of those men. When General Ranger returns, have him come find me.”
“But sir,” the soldier spoke as the man eyed him as if he were crazy. “Sorry sir, I will do as you ask.”
“Good,” the man spoke as the soldier saluted as the man nodded his head as the soldier walked away. “David, what in the hell have you gotten this department mixed up in now? It’s one thing to go after super enhanced human beings, it’s another things to be fascinated with a certain one to go to these lengths to try to capture him. If I didn’t know any better, I’d think David was sweet on that black man.”
