The Awakening – Chapter 4

Chapter 4 — Love On A One-Way Street

Day 17 — Bensonhurst, NY — The Home of Darren and Tara James — The Backyard

“Why are you acting this way JT?”  Tara asked as she looked over at JT.

“Things are totally different now,” JT stated as he shook his head.  “This isn’t like it was when we were kids, trying to be super heroes, trying to make a difference in the world or for our sake, Georgia of all places.  The government is trying to capture and kill super enhanced humans.  If Ranger gets his way, he’ll collect us, catalogue us and then dissect us.”

“Please JT,” Tara said as she shook her head.

“No Tara, I was in his head,” JT stated as his eyes flared with psychic energy.  “I saw what he wanted to do with people like us.  He doesn’t like people like us.”

“Why?”  Tara asked.

“Who knows why girl,” JT replied as he looked down.  “It could probably be because one of his children is like us and that child caused the death of someone close to him.”

“That’s not a reason for him to hate and want to kill the rest of us,” Tara stated as she touched JT’s hand.

“The world is filled with hatred, the reason I tend to stay in Limbo, away from all the madness, as much as possible,” JT stated as the door to the house opened as Jennifer, Darren and Brian walked outside.

“You can’t stay in Limbo and you know that,” Tara stated as she looked up as Darren sat down next to her.

“Hello Love,” Darren spoke as he kissed Tara on the cheek as Brian sat down next to JT.

“Hey buddy,” Brian spoke as he patted JT on the back as JT looked at him with a raised brow.  “How are you feeling today?”

“I’m fine,” JT replied as he moved a bit, putting some space in between himself and Brian as the young man looked down with a frown on his face.

‘JT, behave yourself.  That young man likes you and I’m sure you know it already,’ Tara mentally spoke to JT as she watched JT and Brian.  ‘He’s just like you, he’s lonely and he’s trying to reach…’

“No Tara, I’m not going down that road,” JT spoke as Darren, Brian and Jennifer looked at him as if he were crazy.  “Can’t do it, won’t do it.”

“Go down what road?  Can’t do what JT?”  Darren asked as he looked at JT strangely.  “Are you okay buddy?”

“I’m fine!”  JT snapped, his voice sending seismic shockwaves throughout the air, scattering some birds from the trees nearby as he got up from the table, sighed and then walked away.

“That’s right; he’s psychic and can speak telepathically.  Were you two speaking telepathically Love?”  Darren asked as he looked over at Tara as she nodded her head.  “That’s so cool.”

“Sometimes,” Tara replied as she got up from the table to go in search of JT.

A Few Miles Away — A Local Park

“Are you okay?” Jennifer asked as she walked up behind JT as he sat on a bench in the park, looking as if he was lost in thought.

“I’m fine,” JT replied as he sighed and then looked up at Jennifer.  “I wish you guys would stop asking me that damn question.”

“We’ll stop asking that question when you tell us what’s really going on with you,” Tara spoke as she landed in front of JT as he stood up quickly, looking around to see if anyone had seen Tara’s landing.

“Are you out of your damn mind woman?  You—you can’t be doing that out in the open like that,” JT stated as he pointed his finger at Tara as she just watched him.  “We don’t need anyone calling the police about what they saw and we sure as hell don’t need any damn scientists coming to grab you, to haul you off to some damn lab to experiment on you!”

“Believe me, no one is going to bother me, I’m Amazon, the embodiment of your definition of Wonder Woman, remember that?”  Tara asked as she looked at JT closely.  “Regardless, if someone came, I have the powers needed to handle whatever they can possibly throw at me, thanks to you.”

“Yeah, all thanks to me,” JT spoke as he shook his head and then looked down again.  “Do—do you ever regret what I did to you Tara?”

“No JT, why would I?”  Tara asked as she looked at him strangely.  “What’s going on with you man?  You aren’t acting like yourself.  The JT I know would’ve been trying to figure out how to get up in Ranger’s ass, stopping him from causing problems and how to get to that young man and others that he’s holding prisoner—not sitting here in the damn park, second guessing the past.”

“I’m not second guessing the past Tara,” JT stated as he looked around quickly as his eyes flared with psychic energy.  “Oh no, we have trouble.”

“What kind of trouble do we have?”  Tara asked as Jennifer turned around, her yes sparkling with energy.

“It seems Brian has attracted some unneeded attention and has a following,” JT stated as his eyes continued to flare with psychic energy as he held out his hand as a ribbon-like energy enveloped his body, altering his clothing.

“All right, let’s do this,” Jennifer stated as her body shimmered with energy, her image changing as she floated into the air.

“No Jennifer, this isn’t Ranger and his men, this is the city’s police department,” JT stated as he waved his hand as his clothing changed back to normal as Brian appeared in front of him, kissed his lips and then took off running.  “What in the hell!  He—he kissed me!”

“Yeah, he kissed you JT, we saw that,” Jennifer spoke as she folded her arms across her chest and then shook her head.

“See J, I told you that young man likes you,” Tara stated with a small smile on her face.  “The boy created a fuss with the police just so he could break the speed limit to kiss you the way he did.”

“No Tara, he created unnecessary trouble that we don’t need right now,” JT stated as a few police cars whizzed by the park.

“You know they have no chance of actually catching him,” Tara stated as JT glared at her and then shook his head.

“That’s not the point Tara.  That thing he just did wasn’t called for,” JT stated as he sighed and then looked around.

“You’re right JT, it wasn’t called for, but the boy has been dropping hints around you, since he’s been around you, but you—you’re too closed off to notice anything,” Tara stated as JT looked at her strangely.  “Don’t look at me like that.  I can’t help it if you can’t seem to handle the truth.”

“I’ll let you know when I hear the truth,” JT stated as Jennifer shook her head.

“For a psychic, you sure are clueless at times,” Jennifer stated as she turned around and then threw her hands up.  “If it’s okay with you two, I’m heading back to her place.”

“That’s perfectly fine with me,” Tara stated with a smile as she shook her head.  “So you’ve been kissed.  Now what are you going to do about it?”

“I don’t have time to be thinking about some damn boy that kissed me Tara!”  JT snapped as some birds scattered from the surrounding trees near them as Tara sighed.

“We have plenty of time JT,” Tara stated in a calm, serene voice.

“No Tara, we have to find a place to go, so we don’t have to keep worrying about trouble.  We can’t just keep hiding out at your place.  Sooner or later, we’re going to have a problem we can’t fix with my psychic powers or m magic.  I can’t keep using my powers to shield us the way I have been.”

“No one said you had to shield us JT,” Tara stated as she looked at him strangely.  “Besides, using your powers that way shouldn’t be such a bother to you, it…”

“No Tara, I’m not the same powerhouse I used to be,” JT stated as his hands shimmered with energy.

“What are you trying to tell me here JT?”  Tara asked as she looked at him closely.

“I’m telling you that my telepathy, telekinesis, probability altering and my magic is about all that’s working with me now-a-days,” JT stated with a sigh.

“You’re joking, right JT?”  Tara said as she moved around to stand in front of JT.

“No, I’m not joking with you Tara,” JT replied with a frown.  “The totality of power I’ve been using is my telepathy and telekinesis.”

“Come on JT, you must be kidding here.  What about your morphing power—isn’t it working?”  Tara asked as she sat down on the park bench as JT shrugged his shoulders.  “Come on JT, you have to know if your powers are working or not.  Have you forgotten how to use your powers or something?”

“No, I haven’t forgotten how to use my powers Tara,” JT stated as he shook his head and then looked over at her with a mean look on his face.  “It’s not a matter of knowing how to use my powers, it’s a matter of the power not being there for me to use!”

“Don’t snap at me man,” Tara spoke as she looked at JT sternly.  “How long have you know this JT?”

“Since this caper started,” JT replied as he sighed and then looked down at his hands.  “Since I hadn’t been using my powers on a regular basis, I guess the power just dissolved or…”

“Power just doesn’t up and ‘dissolve’ man,” Tara stated as she stood up.  “I’m sure if you really cut loose with your powers, things would fall into place.”

“I don’t think that’s the case here Tara,” JT stated with a frown on his face.  “Ranger and his damn military men were able to get me and that was a feat that even Calamity or Fatality could easily do.”

“Meaning what JT?”  Tara asked.

“Meaning that those creeps were the strongest we ever went up against,” JT stated as he shook his head.  “Ranger and his men are normal human beings and they were able to get me down with damn bullets Tara.  They took me down with bullets damn it!”

“Calm down JT.  I still believe there is a reason for that happening,” Tara stated as she walked over to where JT stood.  “There had to be power dampening technology or something around blocking your powers for where you were being held.”

“That’s impossible Tara!  Those dampening fields didn’t affect you or Darren,” JT stated as he shook his head.

“Come on JT, how are we supposed to know if I was affected or not?  I didn’t use my powers; Darren used a magical spell to transport us to you and a spell to get us out of there.  So, in actuality, there’s really no proof of what happened that day at the base.  I think you’re limiting yourself mentally because you think there’s something wrong with your powers,” Tara explained as JT turned and looked at her.  “Yeah, that’s what I said JT, now prove me wrong or keep on doing what you’re doing and prove me right.”

“Tara… Fine then,” JT said as he waved his hand as a portal appeared as he looked at her a final time and then stepped through it, disappearing.

“What the hell!  Where in the hell did he go?  Oh, when I get my hands on him, I’m going to beat him like he owes me for back child support,” Tara stated as she shook her head and then jumped into the air, taking flight, heading to her home.

Half An Hour Later — The Home of Darren and Tara James — The Family Room

“Hi Tara,” Brian spoke as Tara walked into the room.

“Hi Brian,” Tara spoke as Brian moved over to where she stood.  “What’re you doing?”

“Did JT come back here with you?”  Brian asked as Tara looked down with a frown on her face.

“No, he’s not with me,” Tara replied as Brian looked down with a frown on his face.

“Where is he?  Did—did he leave?  Is—is he mad?”  Brian asked as Tara looked at him and then down at the floor.  “Where is he?  Do you know where he is?”

“I don’t know where he is right now Brian,” Tara replied as Brian shook his head quickly and then rushed out of the room, shattering the front door on his exit from the house.  “What the hell!  He—he shattered my damn front door!  That boy must be out of his damn mind!”

“What’s going on in here?”  Darren asked as he looked at Tara as he appeared in the room.  “Darlin’, I think you have some ‘plaining to do.”

“I didn’t do that Darren,” Tara stated as she shook her head and then folded her arms across her chest as she walked out of the room quickly as Darren frowned and then followed behind her.

“Baby,” Darren stated as he caught up to her.  “So, you didn’t do it, then who did?”

“Brian did it,” Tara answered as Darren just looked at her strangely.  “When I told him I didn’t know where JT was, he flipped out and ran through the damn door, without opening it as you can see.”

“So it’s true then… Brian’s smitten with your best friend,” Darren stated with a smile as Tara looked at him.

“Doesn’t mean he had to smash the door that way,” Tara stated as there was a loud crash.  “What in the hell was that?  If that was Brian again, I’m going to beat his ass!”

“Ah baby, I—I don’t think it’s Brian,” Darren stated as he pointed at a strange phenomenon in the room.  “What in the hell is that?”

“I have the slightest idea,” Tara replied as she moved closer to the phenomenon, reaching out with her hand, but then stopped as she grabbed her lasso and twirled it around as she tossed it at the phenomenon as one end of her lasso disappeared into the void of the phenomenon as she walked around it, looking for the end of her lasso to come out on the other side, but it did not.  “It must be a portal of some kind, it must lead to some place else.”

“I wonder where it leads to,” Darren stated as he looked on as Tara shook her head.

“JT!”  Tara yelled as Darren looked at her strangely.  “JT—JT, is that you?  Is this your doing?”

“I wasn’t aware that JT could create portals with his psychic powers,” Darren stated.

“You’d be surprised at what JT can do.  He can do just about anything,” Tara stated as there was another loud crash as Brian appeared next to Darren.

“Did someone say JT?”  Brian asked as he looked around the room.  “Does that lead to where he is?”

“Hello again Brian,” Tara spoke as she looked at Brian with a mean look on her face as she pulled her lasso back to her.  “I don’t think this leads to JT.   I don’t like the looks of this thing.  Being that my lasso came back in one piece, maybe it’s safe to travel through, but I don’t really know.”

“I don’t think we should Dar…” Darren spoke as Brian interrupted him.

“Maybe we should go investigate,” Brian suggested as he looked over at Tara.

“I don’t think we should,” Darren stated with a frown as he looked over at Brian.

“He’s right, maybe we should go investigate,” Tara stated with a smile.

“Darlin, are you kidding?  You want us to go into that thing?  We don’t even know what it is.  Hell, if it is a portal, we don’t know where it leads.  We could die,” Darren stated as he looked over at Tara.  “You want us to go in there?”

“Yes, I think we should… I think it’s safe.  We’ll go, once Jennifer comes down here.  I think we should all go and see what’s up,” Tara stated as she looked over at Darren.  “Whatever’s on the other side, I think it would be best if we used our code names while communicating with each other.”

“I don’t have a codename yet,” Brian spoke as he looked down with a frown on his face.

“What do you want your codename to be Brian?”  Tara asked as she looked over at him.

“I don’t know,” Brian replied as he rubbed the side of his head.

“What do you think would be suitable to your ability to run fast?”  Tara asked.

“I—I like the name Chase,” Brian replied with a smile as he looked over at Tara.  “So, are we going to wait for JT to come back, before we go through this thing here?”

“I don’t think we should wait.  I believe we need to go right now.  We can’t wait for JT to get back, being that I have no idea where he went.  I’m getting a strange vibe from this thing and I would like to know why,” Tara stated as she took Darren’s hand.  “I think it’s time for Amazon and Conjurer to get to work.  What do you think about that honey?”

“That—that’s what that man called me, while we were fighting with those military goons,” Darren stated as he looked at Tara strangely.

“I think the name fits good on you, it’s what you’re good at doing handsome,” Tara stated with a smile as she leaned in and kissed Darren’s lips as Brian looked down with a frown on his face.

(<SPLINGGKKKK>)

“ Hi guys, someone’s in danger!”  JT exclaimed as he appeared in a flash of light with fire and energy flaring around his body.

“JT!”  Brian yelled as JT turned and looked at him strangely.  “I’m so happy to see you again.”

“What’s going on JT?”  Tara asked as she moved over to where JT floated.

“Someone’s in danger and they need our help, quickly,” JT stated as he looked at the phenomenon, waved his hand at it and then jumped through it, disappearing as Tara looked at Darren and Brian as she shrugged her shoulders and then jumped through the phenomenon also as Brian and Darren followed behind her.

Someplace in Minnesota

(<PLOOOOOP>)

“JT, stop!  Where in the hell are we?”  Tara asked as she appeared next to JT as he was preparing to float away.

“I—I can’t pinpoint where we are exactly, but I can sense that there’s danger all around us,” JT stated as his eyes flared with psychic energy.  “Ranger and his men are already here and are nearby.”

“That fowl creature is here too?”  Tara asked, looking over at JT as he nodded his head and then floated into the air.

“Don’t forget his so-called henchmen and their nifty weapons,” JT stated as Tara shook her head.

“Why are they here JT?  I thought you erased his memories of…” Tara stated as JT floated down to the ground and then raised his hands quickly, using his powers to erect a field in front of them as a loud noise was heard, followed by a bright light as JT turned his head, shielding his eyes.  “What in the hell just happened?”

“Is everyone okay?”  JT asked as he opened his eyes, looking around at his comrades.  “Brian, are you okay?”

“Yes, I’m fine JT,” Brian replied with a dreamy look on his face.

“Ah Darren, where’s Darren?”  JT asked as he looked around for the man.

“He’s right here,” Tara replied as JT looked at her strangely as she pointed at her shoulder.

“Excuse me,” JT said as Tara smiled and then shook her head as there was a shimmering light that moved from her shoulder to the side of her as Darren appeared next to her, growing to his normal size.  “So, I take it that you enjoy shrinking down to size.”

“It helps when I want to be close to my beautiful wife,” Darren replied as JT shook his head as his eyes flared with psychic energy again.

“The reason we’re here is nearby,” JT stated as he shook his head.

“Was that your portal that brought us here JT?”  Tara asked as she looked around and then back to JT.  “How did we get here anyway?”

“It wasn’t my portal, but I have a feeling that the person we’re here to find has the power to teleport or to create portals,” JT spoke as he shook his head again.  “Be on your guard, Ranger and his men are approaching.”

“Back to the subject at hand JT,” Tara stated as she looked at JT strangely.  “Why is he and his soldiers here?  Besides, I thought you erased his memories and all that jazz.”

“I erased his memories of us,” JT stated as he shook his head.  “Apparently, I should’ve erased his knowledge of super enhanced humans and such.”

“Maybe you should have,” Tara stated as there was a bright light displayed on all of them as she held up her arm, trying to shield her eyes.

“Halt!  You are under the arrest by the United States Government!  Stop where you are and don’t make any sudden moves!”  Someone yelled as JT looked at Tara and then shook his head as he waved and then flew into the air as Darren disappeared from view as Tara flew into the air also.

“Hey, you guys left me!”  Brian yelled as he took off running as a soldier came into view, throwing a net-like material at him, but missed.  “Sorry guy, you can’t nab me that easily!”

“Stop!”  JT screamed as he landed in front of the soldier that tried to nab Brian as his eyes glowed brightly.  “You will tell me what you’re doing here.”

“I… I… I’m here to find a woman.  I’m here to find a woman named—named Helia Stroyer,” the soldier replied as his eyes sparkled with energy that matched the color of the psychic energy that flared around JT’s eyes.

“Why are you here to find this Helia Stroyer?”  JT asked as the soldier moved his arm, trying to reach for JT, but his hand stopped.  “Why are you here, trying to find this Helia Stroyer?”

“She… She… She…” The soldier stuttered as JT shook his head.

“Why are you here to get this Helia Stroyer woman?”  JT asked again, his eyes flaring brighter with psychic energy.

“She… She’s a super enhanced human that—that—that escaped custody.  I… I… I have… I have… I have….” the soldier stuttered as JT’s eyes flared brighter.  “She escaped General Ranger and he wants her back.”

“General Ranger wants her back for what?”  JT asked as the soldier reached his hand out, grabbing JT’s arm, trying to pull JT closer to him.  “What in the hell is wrong with this guy?  He’s resisting me.”

“That would be my doing,” JT heard behind his back as he turned around to see General Ranger.  “Hello again, did you think you were rid of me?”

“What in the hell are you doing here?”  JT asked as he looked at General Ranger strangely as the soldier fell to his knees.

“You heard what he said,” General Ranger replied with a sly smile on his face.  “I’m here to get what escaped me and then I’ll be on my merry little way.”

“Sorry, you can’t get what escaped you,” JT stated as he floated closer to General Ranger.  “I escaped you and you’re not going to get me.  I’m not going to allow you to do your so-called experiments on any more people.”

“Is that so freak?  How do you plan on stopping me?”  General Ranger asked, smiling evilly.  “You already tried to erase my mind and guess what; I’m still here to haunt you.  So you lose Malevolent.”

“Sorry General, but I don’t lose!”  JT snapped as a bolt of lightning struck the spot where General Ranger stood, knocking JT in one direction and General Ranger in the other.

“Oh my God!”  Brian screamed as he rushed to the spot where JT landed.  “Are you okay?”

“I’m fine, just a little bit burnt, but I’ll be okay,” JT replied as he held his hand up, just in time, using his powers to deflect the gunfire from General Ranger’s soldiers.

“I’ll protect you!”  Brian screamed as he moved quickly, knocking the guns from the hands of all of the soldiers and then returning to JT’s side before JT could move to get off the ground.  “Let me help you up.”

“I said I was fine,” JT stated as he looked at the soldiers that lie on the ground as he looked back at Brian and then back at the soldiers on the ground.

“I’m not going to let those guys hurt you, while I’m around to keep you protected,” Brian stated with a small smile.  “As long as Chase lives, I’ll protect you.”

“Thank you, but I’m capable of protecting myself,” JT stated as he turned around just in time to see Tara use her lasso to grab another man, stopping him from grabbing JT or Brian.  “What in the hell!  I—I didn’t even sense that creep!”

“Keep your mind in the game Malevolent!”  Tara screamed as she twirled her lasso, throwing the guy into a tree.  “Conjurer, make your move!”

“Conjurer?”  JT said as he looked at Tara as Brian grabbed JT’s hand, moving quickly, getting the two of them from that spot.  “What in the hell is going on?”

“I don’t know, but I don’t want you getting hurt,” Brian replied as he stopped running as JT shoved him away and then snapped his fingers, disappearing.  “Why is he pushing me away?”

“I won’t push you away,” Brian heard as he turned around to see a strange guy standing near.

“Who are you?”  Brian asked as the man stepped closer, reaching his hand out to touch his face.

“I’m what you want and need,” the man replied as Brian stepped backwards, avoiding another touch from the man.

“What in the hell is going on here?”  Brian asked as he took off running, bumping into an invisible barrier that knocked him down to the ground.  “Owww!  That hurt like hell!”

“Where do you think you’re going?”  The man asked as he stepped closer to Brian.

“Don’t come near me man!”  Brian screamed as the man reached out to touch him again as Brian screamed out, sounding as if he were in agony as he started punching the man, his hands moving at super speed, hitting the man over and over again as he knocked the man backwards to the ground.  “I told you not to touch me!”

“Chase, are you okay?”  Darren asked as he grew to his normal size, appearing next to Brian.

“No, I’m not okay!  Who’s that guy?  What was he trying to do?  He kept touching me!  I didn’t want him to touch me!”  Brian screamed as the tears streamed down his face.  “He kept touching me and I didn’t want him to!  I punched him.  Is he dead?”

“I don’t know, but he doesn’t look so good,” Darren replied as he looked at the guy that lay on the ground.

“Is he dead?  I punched him a lot.  Who is that guy?”  Brian asked, looking at Darren and then back to the guy that lie on the ground.

“I think he’s one of General Ranger’s guys,” Darren replied as the man got up off the ground and then lunged towards them.  “Mokla Zimma Rinn Zoon!”

“What did you just do?”  Brian asked as the man stood before them, frozen in place.

“For now, he’s frozen in place and can’t hurt either of us.  Let’s get away from here,” Darren stated as he waved his hand, disappearing from view as Brian took off running in the opposite direction.

To Be Continued…
